How Do You Test Drive?

Not like that, right?

Local used car lot has an 87 Corvette that I’m interested in taking for a spin and the local Subaru dealer has a BRZ I’d like to get behind the wheel of as well. Won’t be buying either car any time soon, but I’m building a list of cars to consider as a second/fun car and both have piqued my interest.

Thing is, I’ve never done this before, so I’m not sure how to approach it. There has to be some sort of proper etiquette so I’d like to know before I go. Can y’all help me out?

Here’s what I do.

Arrange test drive over phone.

After meeting a sales rep and finding a car I say the following. “I drive cars on racetracks and would do the same to this if purchased, how hard can I push it?”

I then judge the appropriate amount of hoonage from the response. Best so far? Tesla, they let me shut off the traction control and go wild.
